Recently, in the "United Nations Decade of Ecosystem Restoration" initiative launched by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the Chongqing Guangyang Island Ecological Restoration Project, undertaken by China Construction Fourth Engineering Bureau under China Construction Group, was successfully selected as an outstanding case of the United Nations "Decade of Ecological Restoration", becoming the first Chinese landscape engineering project recommended by the Ministry of Natural Resources to the United Nations.
The Chongqing Guangyang Island Ecological Restoration Project is located in Nan'an District, Chongqing City. It is a national practice and innovation base for "green mountains and clear waters are as valuable as gold and silver", and one of the first 15 excellent typical cases of national landscape engineering. In the restoration process, the project adheres to the principle of "ecological priority and green development", closely focusing on the positioning of "Yangtze River Scenic Eye" and "Chongqing Ecological Island", actively exploring solutions based on nature, and completing seven major engineering restoration projects of "mountain protection, water management, afforestation, sparse fields, clear lakes, abundant grass, and subsidence zone restoration". The construction method of "using more nature, ecology, flexibility, and less manpower, engineering, and hard" is practiced, and the natural restoration and ecological restoration are systematically promoted, enriching biodiversity. 24 ecological restoration demonstration areas such as Shangba Forest, Peak Terraced Fields, Peak Homes, Rapeseed Flower Fields, Fendai Grassland, and Shengli Grassland have been built. The number of plant species on the island has increased from 383 before ecological restoration to 627. The number of animals increased from 310 to 460.
It is reported that the United Nations Decade for Ecosystem Restoration aims to reconstruct, rebuild, and reshape ecosystems. Previously, the Guangyang Island Ecological Restoration Project has been awarded national level honors such as the "Green Waters and Green Mountains are Gold and Silver Mountains" Practice Innovation Base, Intelligent Social Governance Experimental Base, Ecological Environment Popularization Base, Ecological Restoration Typical Cases, Landscape Engineering Typical Cases, National Land Space Ecological Restoration Typical Cases, China Habitat Environment Award, and National Green Construction Construction Level Three Star Evaluation. It has also won international awards such as the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA) Outstanding Award and the World Architecture Festival (WAF) Rural Landscape Award. The relevant experience and practices have been promoted by the National Yangtze River Office, the Ministry of Natural Resources, and the Ministry of Ecology and Environment to both domestic and foreign countries, becoming a vivid portrayal of China Construction Group's complete, accurate, and comprehensive implementation of the new development concept, and its unwavering contribution to building a beautiful China.
